As we become more interconnected and tapped in, sleep becomes all the more elusive. For me, that has made the getting ready for bed ritual more lavish and special. After being chastised by my dentist for not brushing long enough, I've been giving the Goby rose edition toothbrush a lot of love. It works well and it sits pretty. Win-win! I've also become unreasonably obsessed with silk pillowcases. They feel great on the cheek for side sleepers like me and I swear my hair is shinier since I've switched over from plain cotton. I recently interviewed Andy Dunn of Bonobos for one of my New York Times columns and I loved hearing all the ways he's trying to improve himself for both life and work. One tip that I held onto from our chat: to make sure to earmark time to spend alone and without the guilt that you should be doing something else. In Andy's words: "One of the best pieces of leadership advice I got and am challenged to follow: Great leaders spend a lot of time alone. When you’re alone is when you can think, reflect, write, read, dream. That enables you to show up better when you do have to show up to group settings."
A new year always brings about a chance to start fresh. I recently attended a MindBodyGreen supper series event and it was pretty incredible. A couple gems to share: a Kundalini yoga meditation breath session led by Desiree Pais (@Benshen) that was simple and cleansing. Simply breathe in for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds and exhale for 5 seconds. The idea is to train your diaphragm until you work your way up to 20 seconds at a time. It was an easy enough exercise that I could see it working into my daily routine without putting too much pressure on myself. I also learned a fascinating fact regarding plastic contamination of our tap water. An incredible 94% of U.S. faucet water contains plastic fibers. We've invested in a very thorough filter at home (by Coway, who comes and services the unit every six months) but it was also a bold reminder to tote my reusable drinking container. I particularly love those from the S'well Elements Collection that look like gorgeous marble and stone.
